I had coffee with a coach friend this weekend, and he asked if I thought getting a diagnosis of a neurodevelopmental condition was good or bad for your health.
I can't say for sure, but I have thoughts on this.
I don't think it's the diagnosis or label that makes a difference. I do think honoring how you're wired makes a huge difference!
When you mask or hide your natural tendencies in order to fit in or do what you think you should do, your body experiences greater stress. And long-term stress has many negative implications for your health.
I'm not saying you shouldn't mask. Sometimes I choose to mask because I want to participate in certain groups or events, and masking is necessary.
But it is important to know what you need to flourish and thrive and honor that most of the time. This looks different for everyone, and it might look different for different seasons.
For me in this season, it looks like:
- Watching church online because the in-person service is too loud.
- Reading and working in my glider rocker because it provides a gentle movement that is grounding and stimulating at the same time.
- Spending time outside every day for its calming and grounding effect.
- Adding movement throughout the day to counter sitting more for work.
- Getting enough sleep. (This one is the hardest!)
What do you need to be your best?
It's not selfish to figure out and advocate for what you need!
After all, remember the airplane oxygen mask analogy? It's true! When you take care of yourself, you are better equipped to love and care for others.
Until next time,
Crystal
P.S. I coach clients to figure out what they need to support their current season and needs. If you would like someone to walk with you through this journey, let's chat.
